The brief

Area was tasked with creating a smart, contemporary workplace on the first floor of the building. The space needed to encourage collaboration and communication as well as provide a comfortable working environment with striking front-of-house and meeting facilities.

Area worked with project manager CBRE to bring to life a scheme by American architect and design from tvsdesign, which had previously designed Fiserv’s office in the US. The client wanted a similar scheme for its Slough office that complied with UK standards and regulations.

The solution

The workplace is an innovative blend of department neighbourhoods, flexible meeting spaces and town hubs, alongside more traditional conference facilities. It also accommodates a large network server room and network operations centre (NOC).

The design is based around an airy, stylish atrium adjacent to the reception, which acts as a central lounge and social space where people are encouraged to gather. Glass partitions throughout the office contribute to the sense of openness. There are biophilic touches in the form of generous planting and warm wood finishes.

One challenge was to marry the architecture of the building (exposed Cat A) with the requirements of the client. For example, the exposed character of the space was retained for aesthetic reasons while ensuring meeting areas had the correct acoustic specifications.

Project insight

Simon Twigg, Project Director at Area, commented, “We worked alongside the original architect and CBRE to deliver this project. We had a tight schedule, but our previous experience working with the landlord, as well as our great working relationship with the client, helped us to bring the project in on time.”
