The brief

The existing office on the Odyssey Business Park in South Ruislip, was not suited to Pioneer DJ’s energetic, dynamic brand. Area’s brief was to design and deliver a workplace more conducive to the company’s ‘surprise and inspire’ motto and creative culture.

The solution

The process began with a series of workshops where we discussed the operational brief with the client’s executive team. As ideas and space plans were put together, it became apparent that Pioneer DJ required something completely different from a conventional office design. However, certain standard elements had to be retained, such as meeting rooms and storage provision. The client also wanted existing furniture to be reused wherever possible.

The result is a lively blend of contemporary style and practical design, with exposed ceilings, rough brickwork, feature lighting and bold imagery providing a vibrant backdrop for collaborative working, product demonstrations and breakout space. Features such as high-level tables and acoustic booths support new ways of working, and the music scene is represented everywhere, from graphic references to famous clubs to images of DJs at work.

At the heart of the scheme is a staging area with a full-on sound system where products are displayed and demonstrated. There are also numerous people friendly touches, from the comfortable pouffes in the central space to biophilic features (plants, wood finishes) and the atmospheric refreshment area in soothing blue tones.

Project insight

Simon Twigg, Project Director at Area commented, “The project was collaborative from the start, which helped to make the delivery very smooth. We ran lots of staff engagement sessions at an early stage, which gave us the insight we needed to formulate a successful design.”
