The Brief

Area was appointed to design the building’s reception – including a curated café and library space –as well as the entire 21st floor, which serves as a shared workspace and exclusive business lounge, at the heart of the building’s offering. The Turing Building, designed by architect Arney Fender Katsalidis (AFK) and supported by hospitality specialists Bennett Hay, whose concierge and guest services elevate the day-to-day experience, the project is a benchmark in modern office experience. Known as Lounge Twenty One, the building’s top floor has been curated as a hospitality-led amenity space for all tenants to enjoy.

This experience-led floor supports collaboration, community and a more exclusive environment for occupiers. It includes bookable boardrooms, a flexible event space, smaller mindfulness rooms, two fully equipped bars, and a variety of lounges, breakout spaces, and touchdown areas. A standout feature is the beautifully landscaped rooftop terrace offering tenants a peaceful outdoor retreat with dramatic skyline views.

This project presented a great opportunity for Area to be part of a development that emphasises quality, innovation, and a commitment to excellence. With its world-class views and best-in-class design, The Turing Building sets a new benchmark for Stratford and reflects the high standards of its developer, Lendlease – all designed to enable focus, connection and flow throughout the day.

Stratford Cross

Situated in the heart of Stratford Cross, The Turing Building benefits from a dynamic and well-connected location in East London. Just moments from Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, it sits against a backdrop shaped by history, innovation and regeneration. The area has transformed into a thriving business and lifestyle hub since the 2012 Olympics, with leading cultural and educational, world-class sporting venues, and retail, and green spaces all close by.

From Lounge TwentyOne, panoramic views stretch across the Olympic Park, towards the city, anchoring the building within a landscape that symbolises London’s continued evolution. This setting offers occupiers the energy of a growing commercial district, while still retaining a sense of space, greenery and openness that’s hard to find elsewhere in the capital.

Design Concept

Our design approach for The Turing Building focused on creating a warm, inviting space that combines a hospitality-driven environment with a refined aesthetic. The goal was to design a space that feels like an upscale hotel lobby, elegant in its colour palette and rich in textures and materials.

The reception, featuring a blend of natural materials and contemporary finishes, sets a sophisticated tone upon entry. Warm timber accents meet sleek stone surfaces, creating an inviting yet professional atmosphere. Flooring from Amtico and Shaw Contract grounds the space with high-performance materials that offer durability and elegance.

On Lounge TwentyOne, one of the key elements in our approach was to frame the stunning views, making it a focal point of the design. The interior design draws on a refined palette of deep greens and burgundy, complemented by warm timber, marble accents, and tactile finishes. Rich in tone and texture, the space is carefully layered and thoughtfully lit, resulting in an atmosphere that feels indulgent and welcoming – reminiscent of a boutique.

Lighting helps set the tone throughout the space, like the sculptural Marset Bohemia pendant lights casting a soft, ambient glow overhead as guests arrive. A curated mix of Calacatta marbles, from elegant white to deep Rainforest Green and Silver Brown Wave, adds richness and contrast across bar and teapoint countertops, offering a timeless foundation with natural movement. Finishing touches like the Franke Maris antique brass mixer tap bring cohesion and warmth, enhancing the boutique feel with subtle golden undertone.

A Flexible Space

Lounge TwentyOne has been designed to provide occupiers with a versatile environment that balances work, social connection, and wellbeing. The expansive floor plan includes a mix of private and shared spaces, ranging from formal boardrooms to informal lounges, flexible event areas, and quiet wellness rooms, each tailored to support a wide variety of needs.

From fully equipped bar areas for hosting and unwinding, to wellness rooms for recharging, the amenities are designed with balance in mind.

With a firm deadline tied to the building’s official launch, quick decision making was critical. Our design team worked in close partnership with Lendlease’s mechanical and building services teams, to bring the vision for Level 21 and the reception to life.

This integrated, multidisciplinary approach allowed key decisions to be made quickly, approvals to be secured efficiently, and progress to move at pace – without compromising on quality or design integrity. The strength of communication between teams played a vital role in streamlining the process and delivering a cohesive result, on time and to the highest standard.

Working with Area in their highly collaborative style on The Turing Building’s Lounge TwentyOne and reception lobby spaces was a genuinely positive experience, producing an excellent outcome. Area quickly understood our vision and delivered the amenity spaces that feels distinct from your typical office building, combining hospitality-led design with practical, inspired touches.
